Sun Never Sets on a Champion

"Sure, I've been called a xenophobe, but the truth is I'm not. I honestly just feel that America is the best country and all the other countries aren't as good. That used to be called 'patriotism'."

Starvation at Umphrey-Lee

As many of you know, First-Year students are required to have a SMU meal plan for both semesters. Personally, I do not like Umphrey-Lee as my main source of food. Though it offers many options like pizza, salad, pasta, and hamburgers, time and time again, I can’t find something to put on my plate. I feel like I would have more luck with a bow ‘n arrow in the woods.

When it comes to the food itself, it boils down to its quality. Using lots of butter and Salt are used to bland the taste of food. If you’ve had the mashed potatoes you know what I am talking about. The “home line” is usually the victim of poor quality food and bad cooking techniques. From frying everything, to making something and then throwing an Italian or Asian name on it though the dish has no origin to that country.

So how has Umphrey-Lee affected my eating habits?

Number one, I just don’t eat there as much anymore, unless I am satisfied with a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Number two, forcing me to spend twice as much money whether it is Hughes-Trigg or off-campus. In other words Umphrey-Lee is charging me for meals there, and I am paying to eat off-campus to get a good meal. Does anyone else have this issue?

  1. I also have this problem becoming bored with Umphrey-lee or Mac's place. I live a maximum of 20 seconds from Mac's place as I live on first floor MacElvaney and its proximity used to make it an easy destination when I got hungry. However; the frequency of me eating there lately makes be bored of it, yet I feel trapped because there are no other places besides Umph that shares the same boring variety but will take the swipe cards. I propose that they make a deal with some local restaurants to accept our cards? I dont know how it would work, but I know I would appreciate it.

  2. I found myself doing this a lot this semester. First semester, I ate at least once a day at Umph but this semester I tend to lose my appetite as soon as I think about eating there. I have eaten a lot of good meals there but I have had so many more bad ones. The one good thing that I can say about Umph is that they have a really good breakfast.

  3. I totally agree Anonymous Mustang. Since I grew up with great home cooking I am very spoiled when it comes to eating. I get very bored with the repetitveness of the food there. It hurts my budget also because I end up eating out more and my parents get angry because they are also paying for a meal plan. I hope that for the future freshman they can fix up the menu at Umph. I must say Umph is a set up from Macs place though.

  4. personally bruce I prefer my food butter and salted until I cant taste it anymore, thats why I plan on going ahead and putting a four year renewal on my umphrey lee plan... in fact if they will let me I'll keep coming back after I am married so my wife doesn't have to learn their amazing techniques. She can just sit back and enjoy the scrumptious atmosphere... especially those fish market fridays. The way the smell intruded on the warm cookies... mmmhmmm its like heaven.
